The inspiration for this bowl came from the gallery style bowl, where spindles are used to bridge the gap. By using three rows of open segments instead of spindles the appearance of the bowl can be changed dramatically.

Lidded Bowl Project

There is a wonderful scent all over the workshop today, it really is a pity you can't see it, and the reason for all this smelly business is one of the little bowls I am going to show you how to make in this article. A lovely smooth, rounded profile, hollowed out, filled with sweetly scented leaves and petals, and then covered with a really elegant pewter lid. It would make a wonderful gift for someone, a really unique pot pourri bowl, and its very easy to make.

3 wheeled steady for DVR-XP

This is my solution to having a 3 wheeled steady for a DVR-XP lathe for a relatively cheap cost.I have seen many photos of finished projects, but never a guide on how to make a 3 wheeled steady, so I thought I would create one. This was for my DVR XP Nova lathe so the measurements are tailored towards that, the critical measurement is the distance from the bed to the headstock centre to create the maximum sized steady (of course smaller sizes can be created, but I wanted maximum versatility).

Pepper Mill Project

A pepper mill is always a very popular woodturning project, it is not difficult to make, and you end up with a really useful kitchen gadget. You will need to work accurately though, as the components must fit together well if it is to work properly. The main dilemma with a project like this that is bored through, is actually holding the work, but a chuck and a variety of jaws overcomes most of the problems. If you don’t have a chuck you will have to make friction jam chucks to hold the various components. To start with you will need a suitable pepper mill mechanism. These are available from most woodturning suppliers, and are sold in a variety of lengths.

louis cube table

Made entirely from American white Oak with the 6mm thick Louis cube inlays being laid onto an 18mm thick ply core, the underside on the top is treated in exactly the same way to maintain balance. The table stem (pillar) was turned on the lathe and the barley twist section was marked out and cut by hand. The three legs were marked out from a previously produced pattern, cut out on the band saw and shaped/finished by hand. The legs are attached to the stem with tapered dovetails each of these being marked out and cut by hand. The table top is attached to the stem with a birdcage section that allows it to rotate and stand vertically allowing it to stand flat against a wall to save space when in storage. The edging to the top is raised above the top surface to prevent items being pushed of the table, this edging was applied to the table and then finished by hand to give a thumb mould to the edge. Final finishing was achieved working down through the abrasive paper grades to 320 grit and 2 coats cellulose sander sealer, 3 coats melamine lacquer were applied each coat cut down with 400 grit paper before the next was applied. the final finish was an application of a clear soft wax applied with a very fine webbox and buffed to finish with soft brushes and cloths.
